UN Secretary General, Ban Ki-moon highlights the New Deal

In his speech to a High-Level Side Event on Least Developed Countries held during the RIO+20 Conference in Rio de Janeiro, the Secretary General of the United Nations Ban Ki-moon has reaffirmed the need to focus on fragile and conflict affected states. He also identified the New Deal as a key way forward. The General Secretary said:

“We need to make a special effort for fragile and conflict affected areas which are home to more than 1.5 billion people. We are working on a New Deal for Engagement in Fragile States that focuses on peacebuilding and state building.”
The g7+ was a major stakeholder in the development of the New Deal and is now taking a lead role in facilitating and monitoring its implementation.
On 26 September, during the United Nations General Assembly this year the g7+ will be presenting a High Level Side Event on the foundational element of the New Deal -  the Peacebuilding and Statebuilding Goals. This event will promote the effective pathways the g7+ has identified for fragile and conflict affected states, especially as the UN considers it’s post 2015 framework.
