g7+ Deploys Election Observation Mission to São Tomé and Príncipe

At the invitation of the President of the National Election Commission (NEC), Mr. Jeudiger Lima do Nascimento, the g7+ is deploying an Election Observation Mission (EOM) for the Presidential Election in São Tomé and Príncipe, scheduled for 19 July 2026. The mission will be led by Mr. Floyd Oxley Sayor, Commissioner of the National Elections Commission (NEC) of the Republic of Liberia.

The g7+ mission will provide an independent and impartial assessment of the electoral process and offer recommendations in line with internationally accepted standards. These efforts aim to contribute to peacebuilding, national reconciliation, and conflict prevention.

The EOM core team consists of Mr. Sayor as Head of the Mission, accompany by Mr. Elviro Fernandez Moniz, Director General of Technical Secretariat for Electoral Administration of Timor-Leste (STAE), and two officials from the g7+ Secretariat, Dr. Felix Piedade, Chief Operating Officer and Mr. Elisio Valadares, Protocol and Liaison Officer.

The mission will observe key stages of the electoral process from 16 to 23 July 2026. On the election day, the team will observe the opening of polling stations, voting process, the closing of the polling station, the counting and tabulation of results, and the post-election environment.

During the EOM to São Tomé and Príncipe, the g7+ delegation will hold meetings with senior government officials, representatives of the National Election Commission, civil society organizations, Presidential candidates, and other international observer organisations. These engagements aim to raise awareness of the g7+ Election Observation Mission and strengthen collaboration in advancing transparency, fairness, and integrity in the electoral process. The mission will conclude with the submission of the EOM report to the National Election Commission and a press conference to present the mission’s preliminary observations.

In the spirit of sharing experiences and strengthening the peaceful transfer of power under the flagship Fragile-to-Fragile Cooperation programme, the g7+ Election Observation initiative was institutionalized in March 2023 in Freetown, Sierra Leone. The objective of this initiative is to observe electoral processes in member countries and help ensure that elections are conducted freely, fairly, peacefully, and democratically.

The g7+ has already conducted election observation missions in several member countries, including the Parliamentary Elections in Timor-Leste on 21 May 2023, the Parliamentary Elections in Guinea-Bissau on 4 June 2023, the General Elections in Sierra Leone on 24 June 2023, the General Elections in Liberia on 10 October 2023, the General Elections in Guinea-Bissau on 26 November 2023, the General Elections in the Solomon Islands on 17 April 2024 and the General Election in Guinea-Bissau on 23 November 2026.
