Ending Poverty in Fragile States

The g7+ and the United Nations in Timor-Leste signs a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen cooperation in achieving sustainable development.

On 13 December 2023 in Dili, Timor-Leste (right) General Secretary of g7+, Helder da Costa and (left) UN Resident Coordinator in Timor-Leste, Ms. Olufunmilayo (Funmi) Abosede Balogun-Alexander, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).

13 December 2023 – the g7+ Secretariat and the United Nations in Timor-Leste signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) today to further expand partnership in promoting peace, stability and sustainable development in Timor-Leste and other g7+ member states.

 

The signing ceremony was attended by representative of the UN Agencies in Timor-Leste namely WHO, UNICEF, WFP, UNFPA, UN WOMEN, UNESCO, UNDP, IOM, ILO that have offices in Timor-Leste. 

The MOU aims to strengthen efforts for joint advocacy and support in promoting peace and stability, as well as the implementation of SDGs in Timor-Leste. Simultaneously, it seeks to share experiences, good practices, and lessons learned on peace and development among g7+ member states through integrated coordination with UN agencies that have a presence on the ground. The MoU covers a five-year period from 2024 to 2028.

In his opening remarks, Dr. Helder da Costa General Secretary of g7+ emphasized the indispensable role that the UN plays in critical service delivery and peacebuilding in g7+ countries. He expressed his hope that the signing of this MoU will mark a new chapter in the partnership with the UN, its agencies, and missions here in Timor-Leste, aiming to collectively advocate for the promotion of the aspirations of Agenda 2030.

 

Ms. Funmi Balogun, the UN Residence Coordinator, highlighted that the MoU will allow both the UN and the g7+ to have a convening partnership to support the government of Timor-Leste implementing an integrated development system. She called the signing of the MoU a historic moment as it manifests concerted partnership of the UN system in Timor-Leste with the g7+.

 

Representatives of the UN agencies in Timor-Leste welcome the signing of Partnership MoU between the UN and the g7+. They expressed their support to realize the goals outlines in the MoU.

 

The g7+ Secretariat and the Office of the UN Resident Coordinator will soon convene to brainstorm on the operationalization of the MoU. END.
