OUTCOME STATEMENT
“Peace in the world and peace in the g7+ countries; Shared Challenges and Solutions”
High-level Summit
Wednesday, 25th September 2024
We, the members of the group of seven plus (g7+) countries, represented by Heads of State/Governments, Ministers, and Permanent Representatives to the UN gathered on the 25th of September 2024 on the sidelines of the high-level week of the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly. With the participation of international partners, civil society, and friendly countries, we aim to:
- Recognize the progressachieved in some of our member countries toward peace, democracy, stability, and development.
- Express our solidaritywith the citizens of our member countries and all those affected by wars, conflicts, oppression, and the resulting socio-economic hardships, humanitarian emergencies, and poverty.
- Deliberate on strategiesto achieve, safeguard, and sustain peace in our nations amidst rising geopolitical tensions. The intensification of conflicts in various regions has led to a fragmented international order, undermining the global cooperation, solidarity, and multilateralism that are crucial to addressing the challenges common to humanity.
- Explore avenues for mutual supportthrough peer learning, fostering reconciliation, truth-finding, and inclusive dialogues to build lasting peace, unity, and stability.
- Promote principles of effective international cooperation, driven by the principle of ownership and rooted in a long-term vision of self-reliance, stability, resilience, and development.
We agreed to:
- Reaffirm our commitment to collectively advocate for dialogue and reconciliation as a means to achieve and sustain peace and unity within our countries and globally.
- Strengthen the g7+ platform to unite member countries in support of achieving peace, stability, resilience, and development by leveraging the first-hand experience of members who have transitioned relative stability. To this end, we will convene a lesson-sharing session among selected member countries, focusing on these successes to inspire and guide others in their pursuit of peace and stability. This initiative aims to foster collaboration and collective progress across the g7+ group.
- Welcome the renewed emphasis on delivering climate finance to the most vulnerable countries, as highlighted during COP28. We urge for an increase in climate finance specifically targeted toward countries affected by conflict and fragility. To further this cause, we agree to issue joint open letter, the draft of which is shared at this summit, from the g7+, which will be sent to relevant international organizations and the hosts of COP28 and COP29, advocating for more inclusive and accessible climate finance for conflict affected countries.
- Call for inclusive multilateralism and a more equitable decision-making process within the UN and international financial institutions. This will ensure a greater voice and inclusivity for the non-Western world amidst increasing geopolitical fragmentation that hampers the realization of global norms essential for maintaining peace and prosperity, as enshrined in the UN Charter.
- Use every international platform to advocate for support for peace, stability, resilience, and development in our countries and other conflict-affected regions.
We:
- Will convene annually during the UNGA to appraise progress, take stock of challenges facing our countries, and discuss joint strategies for promoting our collective vision.
- Will hold a meeting Ministers of Foregin Affairs of g7+ countries in Dili, Timor-Leste, the very country where the g7+ country was established (the host country of the g7+ Secretariat), next year to appraise the progress made since inception of g7+ and to further consolidate the group on its collective mission.
- Thank the Government of Timor-Leste for hosting the g7+ headquarters and providing financial assistance for the operation of the g7+, and the g7+ Foundation for its support.
- Will expedite the process of g7+ Charter ratification and pursue efforts to support the g7+ financially.
