Peace in the world and peace in the g7+ countries; Shared Challenges and Solu9ons High-level Summit

Members of the Group of Seven Plus (g7+) will convene a high-level Summit during the 79th session of the UN General Assembly on 25th September 2024 at 03:00 to 04:30 pm in Conference Room number 11. The Summit will be co-hosted by the Republic of Sierra Leone, (the chairing country of g7+), and the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste, the host of g7+ secretariat. The summit aims to consolidate the efforts of g7+ member states in advancing the perspectives and aspirations of countries transitioning from conflict to stability. It focuses on promoting stability, resilience, lasting peace, and development amidst the increasing global challenges of our time.

Background and Rationale

The frequency of conflicts and climate change-induced incidents resulting in economic shocks worldwide is on the rise. Nations in the global south and particularly those grappling with prolonged conflicts and fragility are disproportionately affected, facing interconnected crises such as food insecurity, extreme poverty, heightened violence and instability and natural disasters.
Geopolitical polarization poses a significant threat to multilateralism, which is essential for addressing the complex challenges faced by conflict-affected countries, including those within the g7+. Ongoing regional and global power struggles for dominance hinder collective action on pressing global issues such as climate change and nuclear proliferation. These challenges require cooperative and coordinated efforts, but geopolitical divisions often undermine the unity and effectiveness of international responses, leaving vulnerable countries at a disadvantage in tackling these critical issues.

While more developed and stable nations possess greater resources and resilience to navigate these challenges, conflict-affected countries, such as those in the g7+, confront significant barriers and vulnerabilities. Interconnected challenges require shared solutions that could only results from inclusive and effective multilateral processes and institutions.

Established to assist its members in overcoming the “last mile” of development and exiting fragility traps, the g7+ promotes peer learning and effective cooperation with the international community. It played a pivotal role in advocating for SDG 16, aiming to foster peaceful, just, and inclusive societies with effective institutions. Since its inception, the g7+ has emerged as a forum collectively promoting better policies that are founded on the long-term vision of lasting peace, stability and are context specific. The group has sought avenues to share the collective experiences of its members in pursuing peace and stability. Such experiences have provided useful inputs to global discourse on peace and stability.

Sierra Leone’s non-permanent membership in the United Nations Security Council presents a unique opportunity for the g7+ to advocate for these priorities and to represent the perspectives of conflict-affected countries in global peacebuilding and statebuilding discussions.

The Summit provides a crucial opportunity for g7+ members to strategize on advancing their collective mission at the United Nations and other global forums.
